Cassandra Barney

We were first introduced to the works of Cassandra Barney while attending an originals show in 2004 that featured both her work and that of her father's, James Christensen. Cassie still participates in this yearly show that now also includes her sister, Emily McPhie, but her career has blossomed to now include many 'one-woman' shows and lectures as well.

Cassie’s favorite subjects are ‘women of substance’. These women that are portrayed in her images always reflect a quiet dignity and are capable of telling an entire story simply by a gesture or a look. And, if the 'eyes are the window to the soul', then her work reveals the subject’s emotions down to their inner core.

“My portraits may not always feature the outwardly pretty or majestic, but they all share a quiet beauty that asks us to listen and to feel. My work reflects my personal narrative, yet my intent as an artist is to create an experience that will allow the viewers to bring new interpretations to the symbols, creating their own narrative and own sense of understanding and place.”

Traditionally, an artist is known strictly for the artwork they produce. Cassie expands on this by letting her audience in on the creative journey through her blog (http://churningsandburnings.blogspot.com). Here, she documents how her personal life shapes her work and vice versa and the conflicts between these two worlds that we all struggle with.

We've added Cassie's entire catalog of works to our store, including a special set of original paintings that we're thrilled to be able to offer - http://www.hiddenridgegallery.com/store/cassandra-barney.html.
