The Wizard Of Oz

"I was reacquainted with the Oz books while reading them to my son. I intended to read the series to him in order, starting with 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,' but I couldn't get my hands on it right away. When I finally found it, I noticed the copyright page original publication date, 1900 and realized we had an anniversary to celebrate! I'm especially pleased to be paying homage to the great Oz illustrators, W.W. Denslow and John R. Neill-that's their insignias 'carved' into the fence post in the image foreground. Denslow, who illustrated the first book, gave us portraits of Dorothy and her friends that are almost inseparable from the text, as definitive as the Tenniel illustrations for 'Alice in Wonderland.' As for Neill, who illustrated all 14 remaining books in the series ... well, if L. Frank Baum paved the yellow road, Neill made every brick shine."

Snow White & The Seven Dwarves

Rather than reference the many popular culture versions of this story, artist Scott Gustafson went back to the original story - a folk tale from the collection of the brothers Grimm - to create this spectacular painting of Snow White in the home of the seven dwarfs.

"When I reread the original fairy tale, it was like meeting old friends," Gustafson says. "I felt a temptation to put the dwarves in elaborate, individual costumes, but I resisted it, because in the story they don't have distinguishing names and characteristics. Since their daily work was mining, their house has elements of metal including the heavy plates and utensils - plus, the alchemic symbols for copper and tin worked across the upper beam in the background. You can practically hear the delightful sounds of music and nature as Snow White and the seven dwarves celebrate the simple pleasures of preparing supper together."

"Of all mythical creatures, mermaids are perhaps the most alluring and mysterious," Scott says. "They embody feminine beauty while remaining elusive and unobtainable. They appeal to both women and men, much like the pirate. The pirate has become a potent symbol in recent mythology (say, the last few hundred years). One need only see the skull and crossbones to unlock a treasure chest of images filled with daring and adventure. This is just one of 50 visual references to the life and legends of jolly ole' Saint Nick that Gustafson has magically designed into his meticulously researched painting. It took him 12 weeks to paint this magical work of art that follows St. Nick's birth in Turkey around 280 A.D. to the present day.

Daniel In The Lion's Den

Like children's stories, Bible stories teach us lessons about life. "I grew up in a small town and attended a Lutheran grade school where I was taught many Bible stories at a very early age," says artist Scott Gustafson. "I think of my approach to my artwork as a form of storytelling; and although most of my work to date has been illustrating fairy tales, nursery rhymes and other forms of literature, it all really comes down to telling a story in pictures.

The story of Daniel is about a man who is punished for his beliefs by a king who was swayed by vanity and bad advice. But Daniel is also the story of true faith in the face of death and of a man who had the strength of his convictions. I chose to depict Daniel standing in a pool of mysterious light. Behind and around him, lions lurk in the shadows - nearly brushing his robes as they pace to and fro. Yet, these ravenous beasts dare not lay a single paw on the seemingly vulnerable figure who stands in their midst. In these turbulent times, the story of Daniel seems very appropriate. For although his faith is the reason he was thrown to the lions, it was also Daniel's faith that ultimately saved him."

Woodland Santa

Up, Up, And Away

Years ago, Scott Gustafson began a series of paintings depicting Santa Claus' annual Christmas Eve journey. When he realized that he was going to be painting the same eight reindeer over and over, he decided to sculpt a model reindeer to use as a studio reference-"Which," he says, "turned out to be a very good investment of my time." Scott referred to this sculpture when he painted as "Up, Up and Away," this limited edition canvas.

The heart and soul of the Cinderella fairy tale is the moment in time when, with the help of loved ones and friends, you transform yourself from the ordinary into the extraordinary. There is a little pumpkin stem filigree on top of the carriage, which had been a pumpkin and the lead horse is confronting the local cat, since the horse has, until recently, been a mouse. There is a flock of birds leading your eye toward the prince's castle and the geese lead you back to the central image.

"I've been meaning to do this image for a long time. In fact, I've been wanting to do it since I was a little kid, after seeing a great cartoon version of it. I have sketches of it from throughout my fine art career.

"If you look beyond the surface, it's one of the more romantic poems in children's literature and that's the mood I wanted to reflect. I tried to make them look like they are in love and it was fun to play around with the night time light sources."

The Frog Prince

The frog is a pretty gutsy character and it shows in his reaction to the princess' food. Her expression tells all about how she feels about this interloper at her table. The king's reflection is in the golden lid cover, his presence mandating courtesy. In the end, everyone knows the ending. the princess kisses the frog who becomes a handsome prince. "And they all lived happily ever after."
